Overview

Sweetheart was an album track on Jermaine Dupri's Life in 1472 but is mainly a Mariah Carey song with JD dropping a rap verse. Sweetheart (The Story), however is mainly a JD track with 3 rap verses. On Mariah's side, this track was released on compilation albums but it came out between her albums Butterfly and Rainbow. This was an era when Mariah collborated heavily with rap artists on remixes and was about a year before she dropped Heartbreaker with Jay-Z. This track was a also featured on the Grammy Rap Nominees 1999 compilation, which is where I first heard it.

Track by Track

1. Sweetheart (The Story)

This track is a remix of the popular Sweetheart song. This version features 3 rap verses by Jermaine and a hook by Mariah. Although the hook is similar to the regular version of Sweetheart, it's sung differently and is a different vocal take.

2. Sweetheart

This is the regular version of Sweetheart that was on JD's Life in 1472 and a few Mariah Carey compilation albums.

3. Sweetheart (W/o Rap)

This track not only removes the JD rap verse but also removes his ad libs throughout the song making it a Mariah-only track. The rap verse is replaced with a bridge that has different Mariah Carey ad libs and is shortened.

4. Sweetheart (Lil Jon Remix)

This is a Lil Jon Remix of Sweetheart. The only difference is the instrumental, which is bassy and catchy and adds some strings during the hook. Back in 1998, Lil Jon was signed to So So Def but was not yet a household name. This might be one of the few tracks he remixed for JD that had his name front and center. This version of the song is clean.

5. Sweetheart (The Story Instrumental)

This is an instrumental of track 1.
